Choosing Your Suppliers
Choosing Your Architect or Structural Engineer
If at all possible, you should try to choose an architect in your local area as they will have a far better idea of what is acceptable for planning permission and what is not. Also, the properties tend to be similar in certain areas so they have a good knowledge of structural work, or they will know a good local structural engineer. If you don't know anyone locally, the smartest thing to do is to ask your local council planning department for a recommendation. Alternatively, if you've already chosen a builder they will normally have a preferred architect.
Choosing Your Builder
Most builders specialise in at least one area. It is important that you pick the right builder for the work that you require. Don't be afraid to ask where they have been working recently. Ask if you can go and see the work they've carried out in the past 6 months and speak to their customers - would they recommend them? Have a good look at the quality of the work.
